Just Fabulous Pastries is owned by Pastry Chef Beryl Ann Byrd whose dessert creations have received critical acclaim from national and international magazines as well as local television and print media.

In February of 2005, Beryl was honored to be one of five cake stylists chosen to display their most amazing cake creations in an exhibit at Copia-The American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts in Napa, California titled The Icing on the Cake II.

In June 2005, she was part of an exhibition in New York City’s Grand Central Station called “Cakewalk in Grand Central” sponsored by Brides Magazine. Sixty cake stylists from all over the country showed the latest in wedding cake décor in one of the most opulent settings imaginable.

Recently, she was one of four judges in a Food Network Challenge, Happy Birthday Elvis cake contest, filmed at the Elvis Presley Car Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Beryl will be appearing on a new Food TV series called Sugar Rush in a segment entitltled ‘Desserts for All Seasons’ which began airing in January of 2006. As contestants in the Food Network Challenge entitled Surprise Birthday Cake Competition which began airing in September of 2006, Beryl and Christy took home a silver medal for second place. Their latest competition entitled Surprise Wedding Cake Challenge began airing in May of 2007 and once again, a silver medal was won.

Beryl's foray into the culinary world began in the early 80's in Oklahoma City where she prepared desserts for a popular restaurant. Relocating to Chicago, she took the position as pastry chef at the restaurant Jovan and was mentored by several expert chefs who taught her the classical methods of producing fine desserts. Beryl returned to San Diego, her hometown, and eventually became the Pastry Chef at the Top O' The Cove restaurant, in La Jolla, where she delighted guests with her inspired dessert creations for two years. Just Fabulous Pastries was born in November of 1987 with only two accounts and has grown into a thriving business serving many of San Diego’s leading resorts, hotels, restaurants and catering companies.

In November of 2003, Beryl opened her stylish little restaurant, Just Fabulous-Kensington with an emphasis on beautifully prepared savory dishes and stunning dessert presentations. Sadly, the restaurant closed on May 13, 2007.

Beryl and her gifted staff continues to create custom wedding, birthday, holiday, shower, retirement, anniversary, and other special occasion cakes. A recent addition to the business is designing promotional cookies, petit fours and other sweets for department stores such as Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales.

Inspiration comes from fellow cake stylists, literature, movies, comics, popular culture, hobbies and travel. Beryl works closely with her clients to create designs that turn their ideas, fantasies and wishes into an elegant, edible reality.

Beryl uses cutting edge methods when creating her masterpieces and keeps pace with current trends by perusing culinary publications and literature as well as assimilating the information and skills learned during her attendance at shows, conventions and workshops featuring international pastry chefs.

Through her teaching at local culinary schools such as the Macy's School of Cooking in Mission Valley, Beryl shares her passion for pastries as well as some of her recipes with the San Diego community. She is committed to giving back to her community and has donated and participated in many fundraisers including the Great Chefs of San Diego for the National Kidney Foundation, Chef's Celebration Dinner to raise funds for the Chefs of San Diego Culinary Scholarships, the Jewish Film Festival, Celebration for the Critters for the San Diego Zoo, Bishop's School, the Helen Woodward Animal Center and the Humane Society of San Diego.
